Narragansett-Cooke-Gaspee Chapter, NSDAR, was formed in 2001 with a merger of
Narragansett Chapter, Governor Nicholas Cooke Chapter and Gaspee
Chapter. Gaspee Chapter
was organized in 1892, named after the British Ship “Gaspee”
which was captured and burned off the town of Warwick, Rhode Island in 1772.
Narragansett Chapter was organized in 1895 and takes the name of the town in
southern Rhode Island where it is based. Governor Nicholas Cooke Chapter,
organized in 1931, was named for the governor of Rhode Island during the
American Revolution.
The chapter is the second
largest in the state with approximately 83 members. Many members live in the
Narragansett area, but there are also members from other areas of the state. We
encourage inquiries about membership, and our Registrar would be pleased to
answer any questions you might have. Prospective members are always welcome at
chapter meetings. Any woman 18 years or
older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal
descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible. Membership
information is available through the link to our National Society below or by
contacting our Registrar at cwiener@cox.net.
Narragansett-Cooke-Gaspee is a dynamic
chapter with many active members. We are pleased to announce that the chapter
had a National 3rd place winner for the Good Citizen award last
year.
The chapter was given title to the Chapman Cemetery in the early
1900s. Recently we have installed a new fence and sign. This cemetery is the
final resting place for three Revolutionary War soldiers.
